The recent Gulf oil spill has likely increased the social consciousness to go green, and wind is certainly a viable alternative renewable energy source. It is interesting to know how we learned over centuries to use wind energy to power our wind mills and wind farms.
We sense the wind by hearing trees rustle, and seeing leaves fly. We enjoy a breeze but fear when it transforms into a tornado. Wind is air on the move and it carries energy that can be harnessed. The word energy originated from the Greek word energos which means active and working.
At least 5000 years ago Egyptians had designed sails that caught wind to move their boats. However, the first wind mills were made in Persia. Persia is now called Iran. The first windmill had sails that were side by side or parallel to the ground that rotated on a side up shaft in a tower that looked like a square. While the wind blew, the sails moved, the shaft rotated, and moved stones to grind grain into flour. In olden times such windmills were mostly used in flat regions where there wasn’t any fast streams or rivers that were used to move water wheels. Most of the wind machines are now turbines.
A long time ago (about 200 years) a mathematician that was Greek and his name was Hero of Alexandria invented a device called a musical organ. This organ was run on wind. It had a wind driven wheel that ran a piston pump and pushed air through the organ pipes to make sound. Later wind mills were used for draining and things like that until the year 1592 when someone named Cornelius Cortez made a sawing windmill (aka sawmill) by taking the main shaft and sticking saws on them. He used the saw mill to cut wood.
A scientist named Michael Faraday found out that if you move a magnet through a coil of copper wire you can generate electricity after some thinking Aloisio Galvani made the electric generator that runs by transforming mechanical energy to electric energy. With the wind turbine the energy of the wind helped the blades rotate and the shaft’s connected to the electric generator, produced electric current.
In about 20th century people found out that they could group windmills together to generate more electricity this is called a wind farm. It is interesting to note that when people started using windmills mostly in California, people called this the California wind rush. Now there is an active initiative to put windmills offshore because of the strong winds available offshore.
Due to the extreme dependent on fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, as well as the threat of global warming, most of the countries are now focusing on harnessing alternative forms of energy. Wind derived energy is one of the most feasible alternative now. However it does come with some disadvantages too.
The noise from the huge windmills can be quite bothersome to those living nearby. There are ways that these wind farms can endanger animals. Windmills can easily cut or kill birds from its force, and affect the migration of birds. When these wind farms are erected in desserts, it comes with added cost of construction electricity distribution systems.
Despite the several drawbacks, wind farms have the ability to electrify remote villages and contribute significant electricity to the national grids. A recent study as appeared in the electronic science news magazine SciGuru.com estimates that 20 percent electricity from wind energy is possible by 2024. Current political and economic situation as well as awareness makes several countries to find alternative forms of renewable energy.

Wind Energy – Using Affordable Alternative Energy Resources
Wind energy has been in use since ancient times, propelling boats and warships, pumping water to thirsty farmlands and grinding grains. But this energy has never been fully harnessed, due to the convenience of other energy sources like coal and petroleum.
There’s a renewed interest in this free alternative source of energy, thanks to the realization that the world’s reliance on fossil fuels are causing major complications, including higher costs and environmental abuse.
What’s so great about wind energy? There are many benefits to choosing this alternative energy source:
Wind towers can be built on land or water, making them compatible with most locations
Wind power doesn’t pollute the environment
Wind is a renewable energy source
No harmful by-products are produced by wind turbines and wind power
Inexpensive operation means reduced energy costs
To generate electricity, a wind turbine is set on a tall tower to collect kinetic or motion energy created by the wind.
This energy is then converted by the turbines into the kind of electricity any regular household can use.
For personal residential use, electricity generated by a wind turbine on your roof and the power supplied by a local utility are combined. Why the need for local power supply when you already have wind energy? Wind speed varies, while smaller wind turbines are now efficient at wind speeds of 7-10 miles per hour, below that, little if any electricity is produced. As a result, local power supplies pick up the slack when the wind power generated is insufficient.
In some cases, you may find that your system generates more energy than you can use.
If your area is eligible for “net metering,” any excess electricity you generate is automatically sold back to the local energy utility, where you may receive payment or a credit. Once you are set-up to net meter, the process is automatic.
There are some considerations to take into account before installing wind turbines: location, general weather condition, zoning ordinances, size of home, and amount of investment. The wind option works best in high locations and in generally windy places. Your house should not be blocked by taller buildings or trees, allowing more wind action to propel the turbine blades to generate electricity.
There are two wind turbine types – horizontal axis wind and vertical axis wind turbines. The horizontal axis wind turbine produces more electricity but it has to be positioned to face the wind. The vertical turbine can catch wind coming from different directions, which makes this turbine a popular option.
For the home, wind turbines rated five up to 15 kilowatts can provide significant amounts of electricity. A turbine can be very large or, for home use, small turbines with a diameter measuring one meter or less will be appropriate. Unless you are a serious do-it-yourselfer, consider hiring a consultant to help you find the best solution for your particular needs. An expert can help with wind speed calculations, the best manufacturers, and provide installation and maintenance.
With all that wind blowing so freely, consider harnessing the power for your benefit. By converting wind to electricity, you can significantly reduce your residential consumption by 50 to 90 percent.

With the “two sessions” of the successful conclusion of the development of clean energy more and more become a hot topic, local government efforts. Solar energy industry won its rapid pace of development more attention. Inexhaustible solar energy as the most clean and cheap New Energy Become the focus of the focus in China has become the world’s largest solar energy production and use of power. Light Solar water heaters One had more than 90 million square meters, and is still 20% -30% annual rate of increase. Although the figures are encouraging, although the fast-growing solar energy industry in China, currently ranked No. 1, but only numbers, not quality, its technology and promotion but there can not be ignored, “flaw.” Utilization of solar energy in the initial stage of ChinaFrom a technical perspective, the current use of solar energy in China is still in the most initial stage, products are mostly glass collector in the form of expression. It is understood that, in our glass solar products solar products account for more than 90% of the total low level of technology greatly limited the development of China’s solar energy industry. It is understood that the large area glass tube solar products use low labor costs in China are directly related. If in Europe and the United States and other countries, glass tube solar product repair service fee is higher than the scores of chanting a single product, so different from Europe and the United States and other countries with a large number of our popular than glass or vacuum tube solar products, but flat-panel solar energy products, which products long life and high cost but low maintenance. As China’s labor force will gradually increase this as well as flat products, solar products gradually optimize prices, this phenomenon should be gradually improved. But here the reference to “flat solar” is not a simple product with water as a carrier to transfer energy, but the cold resistance of metal or other recyclable carrier and as a medium. It is understood that such technology is still experiment, but we should believe that the new technology will soon be baked. From the knowledge point of view, it has long been the understanding of solar thermal solar water heater is also just stay in the use and simply remain in the “production water” in this low-level application layer, in fact, solar energy solar thermal water heater is only a small part. Solar thermal power generation, air conditioning, Heating , Refrigeration, desalination, solar high-end greenhouse, industrial solar thermal applications, and many other respects. Fortunately, in the field of solar heating Heating , Solar air-conditioning, solar air-source heat pump system with a combination of steps have been taken, but the degree of market acceptance remains to be considered. The development of solar energy industry is much room, but need the business from a technical breakthrough, the depth of mining potential of solar energy application level. Central low-temperature thermal solar energy industry should use to solar energy use in high temperature industry forward. Cost of the solar industry, “the most difficult obstacles on”Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet and other regions have a unique solar resources, but for the promotion and development of solar energy it is difficult. Why? Undeniable that with solar energy products, investment and cost recovery are directly related. Solar street light for example, the cost of ordinary lamps than dozens or even hundreds of times higher, however, into the reserve to use later during the day light most of the night can not completely supply the lighting, but also directly to electricity, even if the supply can be achieved, The payback period is relatively long. So many of the local government will carefully consider this part of the financial investment. In addition to funding the “cost”, there are resources for “cost.” Found per square meter of solar heat is limited, that is collected per square meter of heat can also limited, and the temperature is low temperature, to obtain greater heat would be needed or increase the size or the use of solar energy products more advanced technology, this way also will raise the capital “cost.” According to experts, the problem is still not very cost effective solution, but with the development of China’s solar energy industry, product technology advances, this problem will gradually be eased.
