The Green Room: What is Clean Energy?

The gloves came off when Aimee Christensen of Christensen Global Strategies and Ken Green of the American Enterprise Institute headed to the energyNOW! Green Room to continue their discussion on clean energy jobs. Ken Green says when talking about clean energy, it’s important to distinguish between traditional pollutants — like sulfur dioxide, mercury and nitrogen oxide – and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. He says the traditional pollutants can be addressed with pollution controls. He says it;s extremely hard to control GHG’s and they should not be in the clean energy discussion. Green agrees that carbon capture and storage may not belong ion the clean energy discussion because he does not believe the technology is effective. Green also says the methodology of measuring greenhouse gases needs to be addressed. He says the EPA recently moved away from measuring GHG emissions and using a computer model to calculate them. He says that leads to different patterns and assumptions on who is exposed. As for energy independence, Green says the nation’s electricity is already independent. The only thing the US is dependent on is oil, and the top source of that is Canada. He says the US also has good relations with Saudi Arabia and Mexico, the next biggest suppliers. Green says some studies have shown that the additional electricity generated to power a large fleet of electric vehicles will actually produce more greenhouse gases than staying with gasoline-powered cars.
