At this point, global warming is no secret. Fortunately for us, it’s not too late and we can still remedy the situation. One of the ways in which this is done is by using green energy sources.
The advantage of using green energy is that it is clean, or cleaner than typical coal, oil, or nuclear power. Harmful atmospheric emissions are drastically less than with current popular energy sources. Green energy can also refer to renewable sources, which means we will never run out of it. Unlike oil, which many experts are saying is expected to dry up in a decade or so.
Although green energy facilities are expensive to build, they typically require less maintenance so you don’t have to shell out a lot of money to keep them in operation.
The use of green energy sources can also bring economic benefits to certain areas, and even boost tourism. Imagine being able to breath clean, instead of smog ridden, air in even the most congested cities.
While this all sounds great, there are some disadvantages to using such technology.
While green energy sources can supply power, how much it can generate is not consistent. By using renewable resources, we are relying heavily on weather conditions. Depending on the type of power being made, there could be drastic changes or even outages in power supply. For example, if there is a long stretch of cloudy days, solar power will not be available. If there is little or no wind, wind turbines will be useless. Although, there are ways to store this energy and have somewhat of a surplus. But depending on what the energy demands are, and length of less than optimal weather conditions, there may not be enough.
Another disadvantage is that some of the green energy sources aren’t applicable to every place on the planet. For example, energy generated from tidal movements can only be utilized if ocean waves reach a certain height, which is currently about 16 feet. Although, in areas where a certain type of green energy can’t be used, another can always be substituted.
Even though the weather is something we can’t control, it’s not everyday that there is a weather disturbance so strong, or long, that we’ll run out of power. If solar energy is being used, and it’s cloudy out, the energy stored in the backup generators will be used until they can be replenished.
Basically, there are always ways around the ‘disadvantages’ and the benefits of using green energy resources far outweigh the bad. Currently, research is ongoing to try and find even more ways to generate the global power and energy demand. One way is by harnessing ocean thermal energy. Power is created by the temperature changes in the planet’s oceans. It is presently being tested in small areas of Hawaii and Japan.
In the US, 93% of energy is still supplied from non renewable, non green resources. We need to reduce our dependency on energy sources such as oil, coal, and nuclear means. Even if it means we have to invest more in clean energy. There are green energy sources all around that are just waiting to be developed further such as biomass, biodiesel, geothermal, solar, water and wind.
