Why is nuclear energy referred to as a clean energy?

Question by Treblacram: Why is nuclear energy referred to as a clean energy?
Proponents of nuclear power say that it is a “clean” and cheap alternative to fossil fuels, but how can this be? I was recently watching the McLaughlin Group and they were talking about how several million pounds of nuclear waste, WASTE was being created on a regular basis and there aren’t enough suitable sites for disposal of all the waste that is being created. Huh? I thought clean energy was energy that has little or no adverse impact on the environment. Is there something I’m not catching?

Yes and No. Nuclear energy is considered to be a clean energy due to the fact that it uses a very small amount of resource to generate a high amount of energy.

To argument with your point, if you compare all the nuclear waste and the fossil fuel waste (in all forms), you will find that the quantity of fossil fuel waste generated everyday is exponentially greater than nuclear waste. Nonetheless, the effect of nuclear waste compensate.

So yes, nuclear energy is clean because of the energy generated using low amount of uranium; and no, nuclear waste is present in a smaller quantity but the effects are presenting a very big hazard for humans.

I believe that your question should be rephrased. What is your definition for clean energy?

It is all just a matter of progress and its costs. If we want to advance, to go further, we have to take those risks imposed by nuclear technology. Put it simply, at this point humankind can’t go any further only by using fossil fueled technologies.

Why is green energy referred to as alternative energy?

Question by Oggy Boggy: Why is green energy referred to as alternative energy?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it “green,” “clean,” or “renewable” energy? Just what exactly is green energy an alternative to? Is it an alternative to global warming, dependency on fossil fuels, deforestation, depletion of the earth’s resources, extinction of several species, and acid rain? Is it an alternative to fighting wars over oil, oil lobbyists trying to run the show, and large corporations getting tax breaks and large subsidies? It doesn’t sound like an alternative to me; it sounds like a solution. What do you think?

Any of those terms are suitable, although the term alternative is commonly used because green energy is an alternative to environmentally harmful energy sources.

I think it is needed. This doesn’t even have to be about their CO2 and greenhouse gas emission. It can be about ridding the environment of other harmful health depleting pollutants that coal burning plants and vehicles contribute to the atmosphere.
